Peter Mallett

Peter Mallett, 89, of Asheville, died peacefully in his home on Saturday, July 29, 2017. He was born November 20, 1927 in Camden, South Carolina to Brigadier General Pierre and Florence Griffith Miller Mallett. He was preceded in death by his parents and older brothers Pierre Mallett III, C. S. Todd Mallett, David S. Mallett and sister-in-law Sarah Donaldson Mallett. 

Peter attended Christ School and Lee H. Edwards High School, graduating from Lee Edwards in 1944. He attended The Citadel and the U. S. Military Academy at West Point where he graduated in 1950. During his seven years of active duty, he served in the Army Artillery at various posts in the United States, Germany, and Korea. He received an honorable discharge from the army, attaining the rank of Captain, and returned to Asheville in 1957. He worked for Wachovia Bank for seven years, serving as Assistant Vice President in Commercial Lending, before joining his brother David and a cousin in a wholesale beer and wine distributorship. He served as President of the North Carolina Beer Wholesalers’ Association for two years. In 1983, the distributorship was sold and he retired to enjoy time traveling, skiing, and playing bridge. 

He was proud successor to his father, who was a member of The Society Of The Cincinnati. Members of that Society are direct male descendants of officers who served in General George Washington’s Continental Army. Peter Mallett was the great, great, great grandson of Lieutenant Peter Mallett, who was an original member of General George Washington’s “Society of Friends.” He was also a member of the Royal Rhododendron Brigade of Guards in Asheville and an active member Trinity Episcopal Church in Asheville. He is survived by eight nieces and nephews, Tina Mallett of Washington, D. C., Sally Mallett Hollar (Gene) of Weaverville, David Mallett, Jr. of Etowah, J. Hunt Mallett of Asheville, C. Peter B. Mallett of Marshall, Kevin D. Mallett of San Clemente, CA, Kerry Mallett Kingsley, of Pasadena, CA, Pierre Mallett (Adrienne) of Herndon, VA, eight great nieces and nephews and two great, great nephews.

Funeral services will be held at Trinity Episcopal Church on August 5 at 10:00 AM, with burial at the Mallett family cemetery at Bryn Avon in Etowah, NC.

Arrangements will be conducted by Penland Family Funeral Home.
