Walter “Larry” Brown

Walter Larry Brown, a former Asheville resident who has lived the past years in Chattanooga, passed away Sunday, January 29, 2017, at a local hospital.

Born September 28, 1931 in Clifton, South Carolina to the late Walter T. & Garnet Searcy Brown, he and his family moved to Asheville, North Carolina in the 1930's where he grew up and attended and graduated from Sand Hill School.  Not long after graduation, he joined the Navy and became a United States Navy Veteran.

After discharging from the Navy, he graduated from Mars Hill College and also Chattanooga State.

Mr. Brown was a retired Electrical Engineer and a member of Christ United Methodist Church in Chattanooga.

His parents, as well as his brother, Roger Wade Brown; and sisters, Wanda Lou Brown, and Betty Glenn Brown preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Modena Penland Brown; and his daughter and son in-law, Becca Lynn and Craig McClure. 

Funeral services are Thursday, February 2, 2017 at 6:00 p.m. in the East Brainerd Chapel, 8214 East Brainerd Road, Chattanooga, TN 37421.  Pastor Mark Flynn is officiating.  The family receives friends prior to the service from 4-6 p.m.

Graveside services will be held in Asheville at Riverside Cemetery, 53 Birch Street, Asheville, North Carolina 28801 at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 4, 2017.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Christ United Methodist Church, 8645 East Brainerd Road, Chattanooga, TN 37421.

Arrangements are by the East Brainerd Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, Crematory & Florist for the Chattanooga service and by Penland Family Funeral Home in Swannanoa, North Carolina for the Asheville graveside ceremony.
