Death Certificate

Before an estate can be probated and the legal issues can be pursued, it will be necessary to obtain certified copies of the death certificate.  You can obtain a certified copy of the death certificate from your Funeral Director, or directly from the Register of Deeds in the county of death.  Certified copies of the death certificate are $10 per copy in the state of North Carolina and will always list the cause of death.  This may vary from state to state.

A certified copy of the death certificate is typically required by life insurance companies, and are needed to transfer titles on a house, automobile, watercraft, and motorcycle.  Most financial institutions will require one of these certificates to close or transfer accounts that are in the deceased name.  In certain circumstances, the Social Security Administration may require one of these certificates.

Our helpful Funeral Director will be able to assist you with acquiring the accurate number of certified copies of the death certificate that you may need.
