Bob Martin Obituary

On September 7th, Bob Martin peacefully passed away in his home at Highland Farms in Black Mountain.  His journey over 84 years took Bob from his home in Welsh, Louisiana to the Citadel, Davidson College and Union Theological Seminary.  He was a minister in the Presbyterian Church (PCUSA) for 41 years.  Bob served as Dean of Students at Union Theological Seminary (Richmond, Virginia) for four years prior to moving his family to New Jersey to join the Fund for Theological Education, where his contributions and dedication resulted in his role as Executive Director for 12 years.  Returning to his passion, Bob then joined St. Andrews Presbyterian College as college pastor, served as an interim pastor at St. Stephens Presbyterian Church in Ft. Worth, Texas, then completed his working career as pastor at Pine Shores Presbyterian Church in Sarasota, Florida.
Throughout his professional life, he was a part of ground-breaking work across ethnic, gender, and denominational lines in theological education in North America.  Also, Bob valued the opportunity of being co-founder of the American Summer Institute in St. Andrews, Scotland with theologian, William Barclay.  Bob’s passions included travel (24 countries and all 50 states), golf, gardening, storytelling, piano, and eating crawfish etoufee.
Left with precious memories are his wife, Billie; son Rob and his wife Doreen; son Timothy and his wife Phyllis; and two grandchildren Cali and Bobby.
