Gary "Pete" Penland, age 73, of Asheville, NC, passed away on Tuesday, November 19, 2019 at the VA Medical Center Valor Hospice Unit. He was born on May 17, 1946 in Buncombe County, NC to the late Ralph Dupree and Gussie Payne Penland. Gary was a United States Navy and Vietnam War Veteran who served from 1963 to 1967. He also worked as a railroad conductor and brakeman for the Southern Railway for 24 years and was a member of Sunnyview Baptist Church in Asheville, NC. Along with his parents, Gary was also preceded in death by his seven brothers; three sisters; and a grandson, Tyler Foster who passed away in 2017. Gary is survived by his loving wife, Doris "Dotsy" Lanning Penland, his son, Kevin Penland (Sandi) of Florence, SC; his daughters, Krista Glenn (David) of Black Mountain, NC and Karen Griffin of Candler, NC; his grandson, Connor Penland, his step-grandchildren, Brady and Anna Moore, and Randa Glenn; his two great grandchildren, Hunter Rathbone and Skyler Wright; his brother-in-law, Bill Reynolds of Black Mountain, NC; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 11am, Tuesday, November 26, 2019 in the Penland Family Funeral Home chapel. The family will be receiving friends in the chapel an hour before the service at 10am. The Reverend Donald Hare will be officiating. A burial with military honors will immediately follow the service at the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Black Mountain, NC at 12pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the VA Medical Center - Valor Hospice Unit at 1100 Tunnel Road, Asheville, NC 28805.
