Jane Alice Stearns, age 98, of Black Mountain, NC, passed away on Tuesday, December 11, 2018 at Givens Highland Farms in Black Mountain. She was born on July 8, 1920 in Chicago, IL to the late Allen Noble and Alice Strickler Stearns. Jane worked as a social worker with the Red Cross for 20 years. She was a professor at Washington University in St. Louis, MO and at the University of Mississippi where she was also the Assistant Dean and where she eventually retired from.
Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Allen N. Stearns; two very close friends and house mates for years, who she considered family, Ada M. Ladd and Marjorie L. Brown; and her cousins, George and Doris Salamon. Jane is survived by her second cousins, Gail Ferguson of Asheville and Gerald Salamon of Cedar Key, FL; and her niece, Elaine Moore of Minneapolis, MN.
The family of Jane Stearns would like to thank her health care advocates, Marcia Tibbetts and Tobby Brown, both of Asheville, who meant as much to them as family.
A memorial service will be held at 1pm, Saturday, December 15, 2018 at Givens Highland Farms in Black Mountain. The Rev. Dr. Mark Ward of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Asheville will be officiating.
