Sarah "Sally" Thomas Obituary

Sarah Pack Thomas, 95, of Black Mountain, NC passed away on Friday, August 31, 2018 in Asheville. Sarah (Sally) was born in Beaumont, TX to Wallace Pack and Evelyn L. Pack on April 21, 1923. She was raised with her two younger siblings, Margaret Pack Buchanan (deceased) and Robert Wallace Pack (deceased). After attending boarding school in Dallas at the Hockaday School, she attended Grove City College in Grove City, PA where her family had a long history. She graduated in 1944 with a B.A. in History and married her husband, Horace J. Thomas III whom she met at Grove City College. They married as he went to join the Army Air Corps in World War II, and Sally lived with her in-laws while raising her two young girls, Sally Sue (Davis) and Lynne (Diaz-Rico). Once Horace (Bud) returned from the war, he attended law school. After his graduation, they relocated to Beaver, PA where he was a trust officer at Beaver Trust Company most of his career. Along came their third daughter, Carol, and they raised their girls in Beaver through high school.
While a stay-at-home mom, Sally was involved in many community activities and was an avid reader, seamstress and mechanic. She constantly tinkered with a 1930 Model A named Millie which kept her busy.
She and Bud moved in 1971 to Bud’s parent’s home in Clinton, PA where they lived until his death in 1981. Sally then moved into Highland Farms in Black Mountain where she resided since 1986. She remained active as a member of the Montreat Scottish Society, Montreat Presbyterian Church, and as a library volunteer at Givens Highland Farms.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Horace J. Thomas III; her brother, R. Wallace Pack and her sister Margaret Pack Buchanan; and her parents.
Sally is survived by her daughters, Sally Sue, Lynne and Carol; a granddaughter, Eva; two grandsons, Daniel and Voltaire; and 2 great-granddaughters.
