Virginia "Gin" Hamner McLean Pharr was born on May 2, 1932. She died on March 13, 2018. She was born in Winchester, Virginia to the Reverend John Lee McLean and Annie Elizabeth Patterson McLean. Gin was predeceased by her husband of 65 years, James Macon Pharr. She is survived by her four children, Steve Macon Pharr (Stacey), Virginia Pharr Soll (Terry), Elizabeth Pharr Collins (Michael) and James McLean Pharr (Margaret); and her sister, Mary Quaid McLean Hock. Her legacy includes seven grandchildren, Joshua Michael Collins, Sarah Sisler Flohr (Christian), Rebecca Anne Sisler (Alex), Katherine Elizabeth Beery (Derek), Spencer Macon Pharr, Hannah Quaid Parris(Zach), Virginia Worthington Pharr; and eleven great grandchildren. Gin was a lifelong Presbyterian and served as an elder and deacon in the church and was active in many areas of ministry. She had been a member of the Black Mountain Presbyterian Church for the past 15 years. Gin graduated from Longwood College in Farmville, Virginia in 1952. She taught middle school math for 24 years. The last seventeen before retirement were in Cary, NC. She tutored many young people in her retirement.
A memorial service to celebrate Gin Pharr's life will be held on Saturday, March 24, 2018 at 11:00am at Black Mountain Presbyterian Church. Memorials may be made to Black Mountain Presbyterian Church, 117 Montreat Road, Black Mountain, NC 28711. Penland Family Funeral Home is honored to be serving the Pharr family.
