Alice Eugenia (Brown) Penland

Alice Eugenia “Genie” Brown Penland, age 90, of Asheville, NC, passed away on Friday, November 11, 2022, at the Laurels of Green Tree in Asheville.

She was born on July 30, 1932, in Barnardsville, NC to the late Garrett Brown and Bonnie Hensley Brown.  Genie was retired from her job as the administrative assistant for the director of Asheville City Water Department and a member of First Baptist Church of Asheville. She was a devout Christian lady whose faith never wavered.

Genie was very witty, and she loved to laugh. She had a generous heart and a giving spirit. She really enjoyed the days she spent being a fashion model for Winters Dept. Store, Ivey’s Dept. Store and Bon Marche Dept. Store. She was the embodiment of the feminine woman, and she loved dressing to the nines with her matching lipstick and nails. Most importantly, she loved her family. She was a wonderful daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, and aunt. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her.

In addition to her parents, Genie is preceded in death by her husband, Johnny; and two sisters, Louise Shroat and Billie Wade.

Those left behind to cherish her memory are her daughter, Kim Babcock of Asheville; grandson, Lucas Collin Babcock of Asheville; granddaughter, Hannah Grace Babcock of Asheville; niece, Dawn (David) Robbins of Houston, TX; three nephews, Harry (Paula) Shroat, III of Orangeburg, SC, Michael (Regina) Wade of Cullowhee, NC, and Scott (Sandra) Wade of Morganton, NC; and a host of great-nieces and great-nephews.

A Funeral Service will be held on Friday, November 18, 2022, at 1:00 PM in the chapel of Penland Family Funeral Home, 125 South Ave., Swannanoa, NC, 28778 officiated by Pastor Jesse Looney.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the chapel from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM. Burial will follow the service at Forest Lawn Memorial Park,  1456 Sand Hill Rd., Candler, NC, 28715.
