Betty Reeves Obituary

Betty Flemming Reeves, 81, of Swannanoa, NC went home to the Lord on November 3, 2021 while at her residence in Swannanoa, surrounded by her family that loved her dearly. Betty ("Mamaw") was born September 9, 1940 in the Spring Creek community of Madison County to the late Harry and Annie Bell Caldwell Flemming. Betty was a member of the Spring Creek United Methodist Church. Mamaw was a wonderful mother to her two daughters and all of her "adopted" children along the way. She enjoyed farming with her husband, Burder ("Papaw") and her girls, as well as all the extended family that joined them on the farm. She looked forward to going to church on Sundays and then coming home and making homemade ice cream and playing volleyball with all her "kids". Mamaw loved being a mother and grandmother, but she had many interests. She was an avid crocheter, making countless baby blankets for the people she loved. She was a volunteer 4-H leader, Girl Scouts leader, and a volunteer at the Mountain State Fair, where she and Burder were both inducted into the Livestock Hall of Fame. She also served on the NC Agriculture Commissioner's Circle. Additionally, Betty was elected county commissioner in Madison County, passionately serving the county and people she loved so much. Along with her family, she opened 6 Pac Smokestack in Swannanoa, where she enjoyed seeing old friends and making new ones. Betty was a volunteer at the Leicester Community Center's welcome table with her friends, and she especially loved cooking for the community with her best friend, Marie Whitner. She was named the Leicester community's volunteer of the year, as well as the NC Mountain State Fair volunteer of the year. She served as president of the Spring Creek Community Center board, and she greatly loved the opportunity to bring the schoolhouse there back to life. Betty also enjoyed serving with friends on the Madison County children's community outreach committee, and she was always ready to make a cake for the community or law enforcement.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by the love of her life, Burder Reeves; her sister, Martha Kirkpatrick; and her brother, Dale Flemming.

Those left behind to carry on Betty and Burder's legacy are their daughters, Neal Ann (Fernando) and Robin (Greg); and her grandchildren, Reeves Singleton (Dante), Roscoe, and Anna. She also leaves behind "bonus" grandchildren, Amanda Anderson (Ronnie Lee), JJ Singleton, Cameron Singleton, Tyler Singleton (Taylor), Zya Pegg, Marlyn Bautista Amezuca (Nodiel), and Christian Bautista (Elda), as well as "bonus" great-grandchildren, Gage, Bryson, Houston and Milee Anderson, Silas and Walker Singleton, Melanie and Violet Amezuca, and her extra special great-grandson, Fitz Lytle. She will also be missed by her friends, Linda Reeves and Jane Shuffler.

The family would like to thank all of the caregivers that helped with Betty's care and allowed her to remain at home, including Four Seasons Hospice, H&B Care Services, and especially Tanya Metcalf, who loved and cared for Mamaw like she was family. And the family also thanks Carmen Terry for always making feel and look beautiful.

In lieu of flowers, the family would ask that you make a donation in Betty's name to the Spring Creek Community Center, Attn: Veda Davis, 75 Davis Cove Road, Hot Springs, NC 28743.
