Charles John Vetas, Sr.

            Charles John Vetas, Sr., age 76, of Erwin, TN, (formerly of Weaverville, NC)  passed away on Friday, August 27, 2021, at the Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport, Tennessee.

Charles was born on August 22, 1945, in Sullivan County, TN to the late John Charles Vetas and Helen Gouvas Vetas.

He served his country proudly in the United States Navy. Before he retired, Charles worked as a printer and worked for Sonopress in Weaverville, NC and Caramundi in Kingsport, TN. 

            Charles was a loving son, brother, husband, father and grandfather. He enjoyed starting each day,  by meeting up with his buddies for breakfast at McDonald’s in Weaverville. He loved going “across the mountain” with his mother and had the patience of a saint. His family says he was an angel and could do no wrong. He was a man of few words, but when he did speak, you’d listen. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

            In addition to his parents, Charles was preceded in death by his brother, Gus Vetas.

            Those left behind to cherish his memory are his beloved wife of 52 years, Carolyn Church Vetas; a son, Chuck (Melissa) Vetas of Weaverville, NC; two daughters, Heidi (Mackie) Flood of Campobello, SC and Jamie (John) Penley of Panama City Beach, FL; a brother, Spiro (Ann) Vetas of Charleston, SC; two grandsons, Lane Penley of Inman, SC and Tanner Flood of Bonneau, SC; two granddaughters, Gracie Vetas of Weaverville, NC and Jordan (Lewis) Read of Santa Clarita, CA.

            The family would like to say a very special “thank you” to the Cardiac Care team on floor #2 at the Holston Valley Medical Center for the exceptional love and care they showed Charles during his time there.

            A memorial service will be held on Friday, September 17, 2021 at 3pm in the chapel of Penland Family Funeral Home. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 2pm - 3pm. The Reverend Mark Crowder will be officiating.

            In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests that memorial contributions may be made to Penland Family Funeral Home to help with funeral expenses.
