Charles Danny “Pops” Stephenson, 83, of Swannanoa, NC, passed away on September 10, 2025, at Swannanoa Valley Health and Rehabilitation. Born on October 23, 1941, in Buncombe County, NC, to the late Horace A. Stephenson and Janie Arizona Gregg Stephenson.
In addition to his parents, Pops is preceded in death by his loving wife, Betty Louise Stephenson; his daughter, Tammy Lynn Justice; his sister, Toni McMahan; and his brothers, Jim Stephenson, Bill Stephenson, and Horace Stephenson Jr.
Pops worked at Wendy’s Restaurant and was a devoted member of the Swannanoa Church of God. He found joy in cooking for his family, where his meals were made with love and shared with laughter. He also enjoyed playing horseshoes and tending to his garden—simple pleasures that reflected his down-to-earth spirit and passion for the outdoors.
Surviving Pops are his children, Elvis Lynn McCurry (Becky) of Black Mountain, NC, Gary Edward Allison of Swannanoa, NC, Mike Allison (Lisa) of Old Fort, NC, Pamela A. Bogan (Richard) of Swannanoa, NC, Trisa A. Goldsmith (Mark) of Swannanoa, NC; grandchildren, Jeffrey Lee Helton (Hillary) of Louisville, KY, Ashley Allison Stafford (Cain) of Bakersville, NC, Rev. Michael Daniel Helton of Swannanoa, NC, Justin Glenn Allison of Old Fort, NC, Richard Bogan Jr. (Kendall) of Mint Hill, NC, Amelia Ann Oliver (Nathan) of Asheville, NC, Ricky Ballew of Asheville, NC; son in law, David Justice of Black Mountain, NC; two great granddaughters; and one great grandson.
A visitation will be at Penland Family Funeral Home at 125 South Avenue, Swannanoa, NC, on Friday, September 19, 2025, at 10 AM. A funeral service will follow at Penland Family Funeral Home at 11 AM. A graveside at Piney Grove Cemetery at 372 Bee Tree Rd, Swannanoa, NC 28778, beginning at 12:30 PM.
