Edith Vermell "Mell" (Goins) Newton

Edith Vermell “Mell” Newton 95, passed away peacefully August 21, 2024 in Asheville, NC. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother beyond all measure. As a native of Kings Mountain, NC she graduated from KMHS in 1948, and helped to organize the class reunions as they continued for 65 years. She was employed in accounting at Foote Mineral in Kings Mountain and Gorham Bronze in Aiken, SC.

Mell made her home and raised her children in Bessemer City, NC where she was active in many community and church endeavors, including as Director WMU, United Way Chairman, and the Garden and Monuments Committee. Mell was a resident of Belvedere SC for over 31 years, and a member of First Baptist Church of North Augusta, SC.

She is the widow of George D. Newton, and also predeceased by her son Mitchell Newton. In addition to her husband and son, she is predeceased by her infant twin Lola Goins, sister Constance Putnam, and brother Richard Goins.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Kimberly and Mark Yow of Arden, NC, and her son Barry Newton of Martinez, Georgia.

She is also survived by brother Tony Goins and his wife Jane, sister Sharon Carter, and sister Renee and her husband Bob Sandford, all of North Carolina.

Condolences may be sent to Pineview Memorial Gardens, 450 W Five Notch Road in North Augusta, SC 29841. There will be a graveside service on October 4th at noon with Reverend Roy Kiser officiating.
