Elaine Weidman Obituary

Dawn Elaine Weidman, age 61 of Black Mountain, NC, passed away on Sunday, November 24, 2024 at Mission Hospital in Asheville, NC a day before her 62nd birthday.

Elaine was born on November 25, 1962 in Lancaster, PA to the late Donald B. Weidman and Dorothy M. Weidman of Mt. Joy, PA.  Elaine worked in social care; as a personal care provider; at the North Carolina State Veterans Home; and most recently at Ingle’s Black Mountain.

Elaine came to Black Mountain and Montreat in 1984.  She enrolled at Montreat College, where she played softball, staying here after graduating with a bachelor’s degree in 1988.  Hiking to Lookout and along the Montreat trails was one of her delights.  Elaine was an accomplished knitter, appreciated the mountains of North Carolina, and the rich history of this community.

Elaine’s professional and personal joys included antiquing, genealogy, history, and sharing her knowledge and wares in her own antique booth in Asheville, all while knitting and chatting with other vendors and customers.

Elaine delighted in Philadelphia Phillies’ baseball, remembering going to Phillies games during her childhood.  She listened, while knitting, to every game this summer during their amazing 2024 season.

Researching genealogy, reading history and her Bible, while knitting filled Elaine’s non-work time at the Black Mountain Library and the Lake Tomahawk Pavilion.  She usually had four or more knitting projects going simultaneously with a vast yarn collection waiting for her next inspiration or idea.

Those left to cherish her memory in Pennsylvania include her mother, Dorothy M. Weidman (Mount Joy); her brothers Robert “Bob” Weidman (Lancaster) and William “Bill” Weidman (Millersville); and her sister Kristen Weidman Morgan (Lancaster).  Many friends in the Black Mountain area miss her infectious giggle and twinkle in her eyes.

The Weidman family are thankful for the care and love given by the Black Mountain Library staff who were Elaine’s cheerleaders; to Cathy Richardson; to the Mission Hospital Pulmonary Critical Care Unit; and to four decades of friends in the Swannanoa Valley.

A Celebration of Elaine’s Life will be held Friday, December 13, at 6:00 p.m. in the Black Mountain Library Community Room at 105 N. Dougherty St.  Elaine’s family asks you to email [eweidman62@yahoo.com] or bring your written remembrance of “How I Know Elaine.”  These will be compiled and given to her mother in Pennsylvania.  In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Elaine’s memory to the Swannanoa Valley Christian Ministries for the unhomed-homeless in our area.

Penland Family Funeral Home is honored to care for the Weidman family at this time.
