George Robert Barger

George Robert Barger, age 92, of Asheville, NC, passed away on Thursday, February 23, 2023 at his residence.

George was born on April 12, 1930, in Buncombe Co., NC to the late Tilman Walter Barger and Mary Ann Gantt Barger.

He was retired and had worked for Smokey Mountain Distributors for many years. George was a member of Church of the Redeemer in Asheville.

George was a people person. He loved people, loved talking to people and making new friends, and enjoyed visiting with old friends. He had a special group of buddies that he enjoyed meeting with at McDonald’s for coffee each week. He had a great sense of humor and always had fun making others laugh and smile. George also loved to go fishing in his spare time.

In addition to his parents, George was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Jackie Sheppard Barger; a grandson, Chad Barger; a granddaughter, Lisa Barger; and 12 siblings.

Those left behind to cherish his memory are his two sons, Steve Barger of Asheville, NC and Gary (Christine) Barger of Asheville, NC; five grandsons, Shane Barger of Asheville, NC, Michael Nash of Waynesville, NC, James Nash of Waynesville, NC, Kevin Barger of Asheville, NC, and Christopher (Nadya) Barger of Arden, NC; two granddaughters, Kimberly Maner of Asheville, NC and Michele Barger of Hubert, NC; 12 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, March 11, 2023 at 11:00 AM at Church of the Redeemer, 1201 Riverside Drive, Asheville, NC 28804, officiated by Father Stephen Weissman.

Burial will be at a later date at Ashelawn Gardens of Memory.
