Gwendolyn Fulkerson Obituary

Gwendolyn “Sheryl” Wood Fulkerson, age 73 of Asheville, NC, passed away peacefully and went to her heavenly home, on Monday, October 31, 2022, at her residence.

Sheryl was born on April 22, 1949, in Syracuse, NY to the late Charles E. Wood and Gwendolyn Turner Wood.

She was an accomplished pianist, and she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education from Houghton College in New York and was an elementary school teacher in Shepherd, Michigan for many years. Sheryl and her husband Richard, met and fell in love while they were in college. They were married and he became a Pastor, and while raising their family, together they ministered for over 40 years and then retired and moved to Asheville, where she enjoyed volunteering at The Cove in The Prayer Chapel.

Sheryl committed her life at a young age to serving and honoring her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. At age 13 she was miraculously healed of epilepsy by the power of the Holy Spirit. Subsequently, Sheryl was a great woman of prayer, as she believed God’s power is active and alive today. She loved to worship the Lord and played on the piano  many songs and hymns in praise to God in the churches that she served.

She, along with her husband, served for over 39 years in ministry among various Free Methodist Churches in Michigan including Sault Ste. Marie, Mt. Pleasant, and Belding. She was active in children’s ministries, playing the piano at Sunday services, and serving wherever was needed. Sheryl lived the Sermon on the Mount and regularly shared her faith with others.

Sheryl was a woman of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control, by the work of the Spirit of Christ within her. She was a prayer warrior, lover of hymns, and had a heart to serve others.

Sheryl loved, served, and prayed for all her family and led by example. She was also the family photographer. Her favorite job was being a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She loved and adored her family and cherished the time she could spend with them. Underneath her faith in Christ, her family was her greatest joy.

In addition to her parents, Sheryl was preceded in death by her infant grandson, Gabriel Fulkerson.

Those left behind to cherish her memory are her beloved husband of 51 years, Richard Fulkerson; three sons, Timothy (Amy) Fulkerson of Colorado Springs, CO, Michael (Kim) Fulkerson, of Edmond, OK, and Mark (Megan) Fulkerson of Asheville, NC; a sister, Carol (David) Fulkerson, of Harrison, OH; six grandsons, Luke, Micah, Jacob, Levi, Wesley, and Joshua; and three granddaughters, Kaitlyn, Hannah, and Leah.
