James Blankenship Obituary

James Michael Blankenship, 57, of Mills River, NC passed away on June 12, 2025 at the Elizabeth House in Flat Rock, NC. James was born on October 5, 1967 in Asheville, NC to the late Irma Carlene Williams Blankenship (2010) and Aaron Michael Blankenship. In addition to his mother, James was preceded in death by his sister, Tracy Lee Sluder.

James, an Asheville native, eventually made his home in Mills River, NC. A proud graduate of Enka High School in 1985, he embarked on a new chapter by joining the United States Air Force. Following his service, he began his career with Ingles Markets. Over the decades, his dedication and hard work propelled him to become a highly respected leader and mentor within the company. Since 2013, he served as the store manager of the Mills River Ingles, where he was admired not only for his leadership but also for his genuine care and commitment to every customer and associate.

Beyond his career, James was a member of Biltmore Church. His passion for life extended to the outdoors and sports—he found joy in biking, running, martial arts, hunting, snowboarding, and soccer. One of his greatest loves was mountain biking in Turkey Pen. Above all,  James was a guiding light for his children, leading by example with compassion, charisma, selflessness, and an unwavering work ethic. His presence touched many lives, leaving a lasting legacy of kindness, dedication, and strength.

James has dedicated himself to Freemasonry.  He was a strong asset to the fraternity for many years.   He is a member and Past Master of Nichols West Asheville Lodge #650 as well as a member of Veritas Lodge #769. Along with his service he was a Royal Arch Mason of the York Rite Asheville Chapter #25, current Assistant Grand Tyler this year, and member of Lodge service Commission.  James had a great love for the craft and others around him felt it.  James was a good example of what a Freemason is, his dedication and commitment will be missed.

Left to cherish his memory is his father, Aaron Michael Blankenship of Mills River, NC; children,  Angelica Blankenship of Arden, NC, Nicholas Blankenship of Mills River, NC, Zachary Blankenship of Mills River, NC; mother of his sons, Lori Blankenship of Hendersonville, NC;  sister, Robin Barry(Marshall) of Candler, NC; grandson, Paxton Scott of Arden, NC; and niece, Keisha Chambers (Chris) of Candler, NC.
