James Serpa Obituary

James Brian Serpa, age 78, of Asheville, NC, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, at the Charles George VA Medical Center in Asheville.

Born in Wendell, Idaho, James was the son of the late Harold and Helen Beyda Serpa. He was a proud graduate of St. Gertrude’s Academy in Cottonwood, ID, and went on to earn his degree from Boise State University.

James lived in several places throughout his life, including Boise, ID, and Hornell, NY, before settling in Asheville. He worked for many years with Morrison Knudsen in Boise and later with Alstom in Hornell, dedicating himself fully to every role he held. A proud veteran, James served his country honorably in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War.

James had a quiet strength and a warm spirit. He found joy in life’s simple pleasures—gardening, reading war history, listening to classical music, and playing the piano. He was known for his generosity, his sense of humor, and the kindness he extended to everyone around him.

In addition to his parents, James was preceded in death by his beloved son, Nicolas Serpa.

He is survived by his daughter, Madeline Serpa of Asheville; his daughter-in-law, Shannon Serpa of Raleigh, NC; his cherished granddaughters, Allie and Reese Serpa of Raleigh; his brothers, Michael (Jill) Serpa and Jonny (Christina) Serpa, both of Pocatello, ID; and ten nieces and nephews, each of whom he loved dearly.

The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the many people who brought care and comfort into James’s life: his dear friends at Mountain Care Adult Day Program, the compassionate staff at the State Veterans Nursing Home in Black Mountain, and the dedicated team at the Charles George VA Medical Center. Your support, kindness, and laughter brought joy and dignity to James’s final years.
