James “Jim” Edward Metcalf, age 75, of Asheville, NC, passed away on Tuesday, January 16, 2024 at the John F. Keever, Jr. Solace Center in Asheville.
Jim was born on June 20, 1948 in Buncombe, Co., NC, to the late Clarence Edward Metcalf and Winifred Katherine Mason Metcalf. He was a graduate of Lee Edwards High School and a member of Asheville Church of Christ. Before his retirement, he worked as an automotive front-end technician at Skyland Automotive in Asheville.
Jim loved his country and he proudly served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam Era as an elevator operator on the USS Independence. He enjoyed all things military and history related. He was a car enthusiast and enjoyed building hot rod cars, street racing, classic cars and going to the Rod Run every year. Jim also loved to collect pocket watches and knives.
Most importantly, Jim was a child of God. He loved the Lord and his church. He was a wonderful, loving, devoted husband and father and he will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Anna Leah Metcalf.
Those left behind to cherish his memory are his wife of 23 years, Maxine Kuykendall Metcalf; a son, Randy Jones, of Asheville, NC; a daughter, Tracey Jones Wallen and her husband Mark of Inman, SC; two granddaughters, Kyndle Wallen of Inman, SC and Lauren Wallen of Mooresville, NC; and one great-granddaughter, Charlie Isabelle Wallen, of Mooresville, NC.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, January 20, 2024 at 2:00 PM at Asheville Church of Christ, 33 Broadview Drive, Asheville, NC, 28803, officiated by Evangelist Phillip Mullins.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM.
A private burial will take place at a later date at the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Black Mountain, NC.
