Jerry Slagle Obituary

Jerry Carroll Paul Slagle, age 70, of Black Mountain, NC, passed away on Friday, May 19, 2023 at Mission Hospital in Asheville, NC.

Jerry was born on December 5, 1952 in Buncombe County to the late J. P. Slagle and Louise Effler Slagle.

Jerry worked for Cooper Bussman, Inc. before becoming disabled due to a motorcycle accident. He was one of the founders of the Smoky Mountain Toy Run and he was a member of the Black Mountain Moose Lodge. He always loved leading the Black Mountain Christmas parade on his “Moose Horned” motorcycle he named “Old Blue”.

Jerry loved to ride motorcycles. He also enjoyed going camping and canoeing. He was a wonderful brother, with a kind and caring heart. Jerry was a genuine and loyal friend who was a straight-shooter and a mentor to many. He had a great sense of humor and loved to joke around with his buddies. He was spontaneous in his adventures and he always had a fun story to tell about them. He was a cherished friend and  loved by so many and will be sorely missed always.

Those left behind to cherish his memory are his beloved brother, Bobby Slagle, of Black Mountain; a whole bunch of dear cousins; and an endless number of friends who were like family to him.

A Celebration of Jerry’s life will be held on Saturday, June 3, 2023 at 2:00 PM in the chapel of Penland Family Funeral Home, 125 South Ave., Swannanoa, NC, conducted by Reverend Kenneth Rhinehardt.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at the funeral home.

The family respectfully requests that any memorial contributions in Jerry’s honor be made to: Swannanoa Valley Christian Ministries, 101 N. Ridgeway Ave., Black Mountain, NC 28711 and/or The Smoky Mountain Toy Run.
