Joan Harriet Gebe Cox, age 89, of Hendersonville, NC, passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 24, 2023 at her residence, surrounded by her loving family.
Joan was born on January 5, 1934 in Henderson Co., NC, to the late Jack S. Gebe and Ada Mae Rogers Gebe.
She was the oldest member of Fruitland United Methodist Church. She was an elementary school teacher for 20 years at Edneyville Elementary School before she retired.
Joan was a very loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She loved to cook and feed her family and friends. She also had a green thumb and enjoyed growing flowers in her garden. Joan was a lover of animals too, and she always seemed to attract them to her with her gentle nature.
Joan was someone you could always trust to give you the right answer and good advice. She was a people person who enjoyed making friends and getting to know you. She served as the secretary of the Apple Country Tractor Club.
In addition to her parents, Joan was preceded in death by her son, Alton Luther Cox; a daughter, Linda Harriet Cox; a grandson, Michael Evan Cox; and a brother, Jackie Gebe.
Those left behind to cherish her memory are her beloved husband of 69 years, Luther Cox; a son, James Tyler Cox and his wife Pamela of Marion, NC; two grandsons, Randall Edward Cox and Daniel Lee Cox, both of Hendersonville, NC; a granddaughter, Christy Gail Griffin and her husband David of Bat Cave, NC; two great-grandsons, Ryan Skeens of Bat Cave, NC and Cameron Lee Cox of Saluda, NC; two sisters, Anna Stevens of Hendersonville, NC and Mary Ada Trail of Maryland.
A Graveside Service will be announced as soon as plans are finalized.
The family would like to say a very special “thank-you” to the Four Seasons Hospice nurses and staff, for the loving care they gave Joan. They went above and beyond and were a God-send to them.
