John Dennis Gorman Sr., 85, passed away peacefully at his home on May 14, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. Born on November 26, 1940, in Leicester, NC, he was the son of the late Carter Lee Gorman and Reva Plemmons Gorman.
In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his loving wife, Carolyn Gorman; his sister, Helen Mears; and his first wife, Carole Wood Gorman.
A lifelong resident of Leicester, John only left home during his proud service in the United States Air Force, where he served as a Fire Protection Specialist and spent time stationed in England, Italy, and Germany. After returning home, he began a 32‑year career with Southern Railway, from which he later retired. He was a longtime and faithful member of Grace United Methodist Church in Leicester and a member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers (BLE).
John had a deep love for the simple joys of life. He enjoyed watching NASCAR, basketball, and football, and he never got tired of the timeless charm of The Andy Griffith Show. His happiest moments were often spent on his land, riding his tractor with his loyal dog, Tink, and his granddaughter, Jessica.
He is survived by his children, John Dennis Gorman Jr. (Sabrina) of Leicester, NC, Deborah Gorman, and Jody Wright (Mark) of Leicester, NC; his siblings, Carter Lee Gorman Jr. (Wanda) of Leicester, NC, and Sharon Gorman Sutton (Joe) of Wilmington, NC; his granddaughter, Jessica Jensen of Leicester, NC; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
A visitation will be held on Monday, May 18, 2026, from 1:00–2:00 PM at Grace United Methodist Church, 876 Newfound Road, Leicester, NC 28748. A funeral service will follow from 2:00–3:00 PM, with a graveside service immediately afterward.
