Lawrence A. Walz

Lawrence Walz died July 12, 2025, after a long fight with vascular dementia. He was 83. Son of the late Mildred C. and Arnold L. Walz of Asheville, Larry leaves behind a brother, Joel Walz, of Easthampton, MA. Cousins Sue Walz, Henry Walz, and Susan Grant of Easthampton, Deborah Leopold and David Sacks of Holyoke, MA, David and Ruth Walz in Virginia, Judy Landreneau in Texas, Jane Walz in California, and his friend Hope Harder in Oklahoma.
Larry was educated in the public schools of Easthampton, MA, and Asheville. He graduated from Lee H. Edwards (Asheville) High School in 1960. He received the B.A., the M.A., and the Ph.D. in English from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He taught English and American literature on the college level, as well as English as a Second Language, and he worked as a technical writer.
He had many interests. He enjoyed and wrote about movies. He especially liked science fiction. He listened to classical music on public broadcasting and was an avid reader. He enjoyed photography and researching his family history in old newspapers. He also had a life-long fascination with astronomy. His brother, Joel, took him to Brevard in August 2017 to witness the total solar eclipse. He described it as the happiest day of his life.
