Peggy Stewart Obituary

Peggy Jo Brigman Stewart, beloved "Meemaw," 86, surrounded by her family, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, March 26, 2025, in Asheville, North Carolina. Born on September 13, 1938, Peggy was a proud graduate of The Crossnore School in Avery County, NC. She dedicated many years of her life to Beacon Manufacturing Company, working in the "cribs" department before retiring. For over three decades, she faithfully assisted her dear friends Allan and Ruth Dean, reflecting her deep commitment to those she cared about. Peggy was the heart of her large and lively family. Affectionately known as “Meemaw,” she is survived by her children: Danny Brigman; Pamela Myers Haynes (Andy); David Myers (Tonia); Billy Stewart (Andi); and Robert Stewart. She also leaves behind her brother Bobby “Bud” Brigman (Editha); 17 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews, especially Elizabeth "Beth" Brigman, and grandniece, Ashley Whittle. She was preceded in death by her mother, Nancy Jenkins Brigman; ten siblings; and her grandson, Jacob Stewart. A true Southern Appalachian spirit, Peggy was known for her infectious smile, hearty laugh, and boundless warmth. She found joy in cooking, gardening, swimming, shopping, cheering at her family's athletic events, and gathering with family weekly. A devoted Owen Warhorse fan and an esteemed member of her swim club, she never met a stranger and was a weekly presence at the WNC Farmers' Market. Her unmatched green thumb brought bounty to her table and beauty to every space she touched. Peggy attended many cherished services at Mountain View Church with her children and grandchildren. A celebration of her life will be held on Wednesday, April 2, 2025, from 2 to 4 p.m. at Mountain View Church, 2221 North Fork Road-Right Fork, Black Mountain, NC. In honor of Peggy’s memory, consider planting something in a local community garden or donating to the Owen High School Athletic Boosters. May her memory bring comfort to all who knew and loved her.
