It is with great sadness that the Shipman family announces the passing of Phillip Allen Shipman at the age of 39 on August 18th, 2020. He leaves behind his dear wife of ten years, Glenna, and his daughter Katherine, as well as his close-knit family: father Charlie, mother Susie (née Hendricks), older siblings Kerri Eudy (husband Michael) and Wayne, and his beloved nieces and nephews, Connor, Autumn, Amelia, Caleb, and Alazae. He also leaves several aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Phillip was born on April 28, 1981 and lived in Asheville, North Carolina his entire life. He attended Oakley Elementary, where he played baseball and basketball for the youth league. He also attended AC Reynolds Middle and High Schools, graduating in 1999. Phillip loved to sing and was in chorale and had the opportunity to perform at Disney World. He earned his Associates Degree in Computer Science from AB Tech and attended UNCA, where he worked as a tutor in the computer lab. As a Corporate Escalation Senior Supervisor for Consumer Affairs at OceanX, Phillip worked hard while still making the job fun for himself and his coworkers. His work family remembers him for his dependability and sense of humor -- especially about the manager who only knew him as “Batman” for almost a year thanks to the decorations at his desk.
Phillip was quick-witted and quick to laugh, and never took life too seriously. He loved gaming and made many local and global friends through World of Warcraft and Pokémon Go. He was a completionist and a collector, taking weekly trips to his favorite comic book store, Pastimes, to add to his huge collection of comics, games, and action figures. Deeply loving, he enjoyed spoiling his nieces, nephews, and daughter. Over the years, he took all of them along on his and Glenna’s weekly “rounds” to Waffle House, Pastimes, and GameStop.
Phillip had a big heart, a sweet smile, and a lifelong love of Batman, his all-time favorite comic book character. Like Batman, Phillip was intelligent, thoughtful, and kind. Uncle “Woobie” has left a hole in his family’s hearts. Batman doesn’t always stay in his cave.
