He will be returned home to North Carolina and laid to rest in Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery, 962 Old US Hwy 70, Black Mountain, NC 28711 on Thursday, April 9, 2026.
Robert was a self-made man who began forging his own path at the tender age of 15. Demonstrating an early and remarkable resilience, he struck out on his own- a decision that would define his life as one marked by independence and hard work. Despite the challenges of early independence, Robert was committed to his intellectual growth, successfully completing his education.
He joined the United States Army and served his country honorably during the Vietnam War. This period of his life instilled in him a profound sense of discipline and a dedication to duty that he carried into every aspect of his life.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Genevieve (Goldsmith); brothers, John and Roger, and his devoted, longtime companion, Sheryline “Lynn” Scott, whose presence enriched his later years.
He leaves behind a family who will cherish his memory- brothers, Frank, Fred, Steve, and Jerry; daughters, Dawn and Nicole; grandsons, Christopher and James Upshaw; and great-granddaughter, Vetta Fultz.
Robert’s life was a testament to perseverance, grit, and the enduring power of the human spirit. His journey from a young man striking out alone to a respected veteran and family patriarch serves as an inspiration to all who knew him. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who were touched by his singular character.
