Roger Campbell Obituary

Roger William Campbell, age 91, of Asheville, NC, passed away on Thursday, November 3, 2022, at the John F. Keever, Jr. Solace Center in Asheville.

Roger was born on April 13, 1931, in Tampa, FL to the late Ira Campbell and Elva Beasley Campbell. He was a member of Beverly Hills Baptist Church and was retired from his job as Administrative Assistant at Tampa Electric in Tampa, FL.

Roger attended the University of South Florida and was a veteran. He served his country proudly in the United States Army during the Korean War era.

He was a devout Christian man and a devoted family man who loved his family, and he loved his Savior. He enjoyed the yearly family vacations at Hilton Head and always looked forward to the times he and his entire family could be together. Roger also loved being involved at his church and serving as a volunteer. He served as Sunday School President and Deacon for 25 years. He especially loved the choir and after every service he shook each of the choir members’ hands to show his love and appreciation for their music and ministry.

Roger enjoyed volunteering at the Billy Graham Training Center and at Mission Hospital as a front desk guide, as well as at the Welcome Table at Groce Community Church and Beverly Hills Baptist Church. He was always the one who would say the blessing at the dinner table, and he even attended church on the Sunday before he passed away. He was a wonderful blessing to his family, and they will miss him until they meet again in heaven.

In addition to his parents, Roger was preceded in death by two brothers, Richard and Harold Campbell; a sister, Dorothy Campbell; and an infant grandson, William Gabriel Sodorff.

Those left behind to cherish his memory are his beloved wife of 59 years, Janis Stein Campbell; a daughter, Susan (Jay) Sparks of Las Vegas, NV; a son, Roger W. Campbell, II of Scottsdale, AZ; five granddaughters, Ashley (Derek) Gladding of Asheville, Emily Sodorff of Las Vegas, NV, Taylor (Jacob) Smith of Phoenix, AZ, Reagan Campbell of Phoenix, AZ and Zoey Sparks of Hendersonville, NC; two grandsons, Justin Campbell of Asheville, NC and Matthew Campbell of Phoenix, AZ; two great-granddaughters, Brooklyn Gladding of Asheville, NC and Lilith Smith of Phoenix, AZ; and one great-grandson, Braxtyn Gladding of Asheville, NC.

A Graveside Service will be held on Wednesday, November 9, 2022, at 2:00 PM at Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery conducted by Reverend Dennis Goodwin and full military honors will be given by the North Carolina National Guard Honor Guard.
