Obituary
Shirley Louise Sanders Harwood, age 78 of Old Fort, NC, passed away on Sunday, August 20, 2023 at Mission Hospital McDowell in Marion, NC.
Shirley was born on March 17, 1945 in Buncombe County, NC to the late Leland Edmond Sanders and Ruth Ray Sanders.
Shirley was a very loving and caring wife, mother and grandmother. She was an aviation painter before she retired. Shirley loved to cook and she was a wonderful cook. Her chicken and dumplings and coleslaw were her family’s favorite dish. Shirley was a feisty and outspoken lady and you always knew where you stood with her and she loved her family dearly. She will be deeply missed.
In addition to her parents, Shirley was preceded in death by her daughter, Cheryl Harwood; a grandson, Dustin Cooper; and three brothers, Leland, Neal, and Cecil Sanders.
Those left behind to cherish her memory are her beloved husband of 41 years, Charles “Don” Donald Harwood; two sons, David Odum and his wife Dawn, of Fairview, NC and Charlie Harwood, II and his wife Kim of Old Fort, NC; two grandsons, Jake Harwood of Asheville, NC and Derrick Cooper of Swannanoa, NC; two granddaughters, Cassidy Odum of Arden, NC and Laken Harwood of Swannanoa, NC; two brothers, Kenneth Sanders and his wife Donna, and Leroy Sanders and his wife Phyllis, both of Leicester, NC; and six great-grandchildren.
A Graveside Service will be held on Tuesday, September 5, 2023, at 12:00 PM at the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery, 962 Old US Hwy 70, Black Mountain, NC, 28711, officiated by Pastor Billy Clark.
In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests that memorial contributions in Shirley’s honor be made to: Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, 50 S. French Broad Ave., Suite 213, Asheville, NC 28801.
