Stephen “Steve” Geoffrey Hughes, age 81, of Swannanoa, NC, passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, May 9, 2026, with his family by his side.
Steve was born on September 17, 1944, in Winchester, England, to the late Derek P. Hughes (1999) and Marion M. Hughes (2012). He attended Woodward School in Washington, D.C., and proudly served his country in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War. He later retired from Matthews Appliance Services in Raleigh, NC, after 28 years.
Steve attended First Christian Church of Black Mountain. He especially enjoyed watching NASCAR, the Washington Redskins, and the Carolina Hurricanes. He was an active member for 46 years at Hillyer Memorial Christian Church in Raleigh and especially enjoyed the 10 years he played handbells before moving to Swannanoa.
Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife of 51 years, Donna Myers Hughes of the home; his brother, Timothy Hughes of Amesbury, Wiltshire, UK; his brother‑in‑law, Steve Myers, and wife Beth of Candler, NC; his niece, Joyner K. Myers of Candler; and his nephew, Adam D’Oyly John of the United Kingdom and many cousins from Canada, England and Wales.
A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, May 30, 2026 at First Christian Church of Black Mountain with Rev. Dr. Kevin Miller and Rev. Dr. Kevin Bates officiating. A reception will follow the service at the Church.
