Teddy "Ted" Rathbone, age 35, of Black Mountain, NC, passed away on Wednesday, February 11, surrounded by his loving family.
Born September 2 1990, in Asheville, NC to Justin and Kathy Rathbone. He is preceded in death by his Father Justin Rathbone, Grandparents Edsel Martin, Lois king, Iva Lee and Charlie Rathbone.
He is survived by his mother, Kathy Rathbone; son Hunter Rathbone; Bonus daughter Skylar Wright; His sister's Cathy Lee Jones(Susan), Kimberly Trantham; Brother Ronald Trantham; lifelong friend, star mate, and Mother to his child Randa Glenn (Frank); "Second" Mother Paula Hudson (Jeff); and niece Maddison Jones.
Ted was a true original — a self-proclaimed “entrepreneur of opportunity,” a storyteller, and never missed the chance to make people laugh, whether they were ready for it or not. He carried a playful spirit and a quick wit, often serving as the comedian of the family. Above all else, Ted loved deeply, and his devotion to his family was greater than words could ever fully express.
From his early years, Ted found happiness in the simple moments — fishing, hunting, and camping alongside his dad, Justin, and friends. Those memories shaped his love for the outdoors. His high-school sweetheart, Randa, was always in tow throughout his life. She was Teddy’s “rock and chain,”.
Their bond was inseparable, rooted in loyalty, laughter, and unwavering love. Life time of playful banter, memories that Teddy treasured close to his heart.
Ted’s greatest pride was his son Hunter, his bonus daughter Skylar, and his niece Maddison. They were the center of his world and the legacy he cherished most.
Ted shared special connections with his siblings — inside jokes with his sister Lee, who would always “make a nice with bro,” to beach visits with his sister Kimberly and tackling projects with his brother Ron, usually with a laugh or two (and maybe a few extra opinions). His love for his Momma could move mountains.
Ted will be deeply missed by his family and friends, who will remember his big heart, quick wit, larger-than-life spirit and ability to turn ordinary moments into lasting memories. He will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, February 20, 2026, at 2 PM in the chapel of Penland Family Funeral Home, 125 South Ave., Swannanoa, NC 28778. The family will receive friends an hour prior, from 1 PM to 2 PM, with burial at Mountain View Memorial Park to follow the funeral service.
