William “Bill” Bryan Hinson happily walked through the gates of heaven at the age of 88 on March 3, 2021 where he was welcomed with opened arms by his mama and papa, Lois and Walker Hinson, his sister, Ruth Fore, his brothers, J.C. and Jennings Hinson along with countless family members and friends. Bill was born in Buncombe County and was the next to the youngest of six siblings.
Leaving behind to carry on his legacy of love and serving are his children, Debra Luther, Dianne Workman (Dan), David Hinson (Kim) and Daniel Hinson (Roxie); 5 granddaughters, Heather Colburn (Brad), Shannon Driver (Chris), Jennifer Hannah, Megan Hollingsworth (Josh) and Kayla Hinson; one grandson, James Hinson; one great-granddaughter and 7 great-grandsons; Linda Ownbey, his love and companion for the last 14 years; multiple nieces and nephews; and two brothers, Arvil and Ted Hinson (Martha).
After graduating from Candler High School, Bill played AAA baseball where he was signed by the Cardinals and his final contract was bought out by the Yankees. Following his baseball career, he worked for Merita Bread, Sealtest Dairy, Champion, Enka, and later became certified to artificially breed cows for Curtis Breeding Service . He did all of this in order to put his four children through college. One of his last jobs was working for the Buncombe County School system in maintenance. He ended his working career by mowing yards for people in the community.
A visitation will be held on Sunday, July 11, 2021 at Covenant Community Church, 11 Rocket Drive, Asheville NC, from 3:00 – 4:00. A celebration of life service will be held immediately following the visitation, with Pastor Rich Tuttle and Pastor Bob Kretzu officiating.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. We also believe that Bill would want you to do an unexpected and unsolicited act of kindness for someone else. We hope you will let his example of paying it forward be your challenge as you do the same! Penland Family Funeral Home is honored to be caring for the Hinson Family.
