Almeda Lovadia Tweed

    Almeda Lovadia Tweed, 77, of Swannanoa passed away Tuesday, January 2, 2018 at JFK Solace Center in Asheville. She was born on May 25, 1940 in Madison County, NC to the late Anderson and Bertha Shelton Tweed. She retired from the Asheville Police Department in 1988 as one of the first female officers to be sworn into the department and was of the Baptist faith. Almeda is preceded in death by two of her children, Eva Lavern Johnson and Robert Dean Sams; as well as grandchildren, Shondre Sams and Uhon Johnson. She is survived by her daughter, Roberta "Charlyne" Sams of Swannanoa; sisters, Deane Anderson of Alexander and Louise Williams (Paul) of Oakley; step-sister, Jeanette Guthrie of Swannanoa; three grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; five great-great grandchildren; multiple nieces and nephews; her best friend and co-worker, Iris Durell of Asheville; and her fur baby, Sassy.
    A funeral service will be held at 2:00pm on Saturday, January 6, 2018 in the Penland Family Funeral Home chapel. The family will receive friends an hour before the service. Officiating the service will be Rev. James Lamb. A burial will follow at Green Hills Cemetery in Asheville. Penland Family Funeral Home is serving the family.
